Are you stuck in a job rut? A career is just a job without the ability to progress.

We all know that there are so many factors that come into play when considering what makes a job more than a job. Money, perks, flexibility, learning & development, connection and purpose are all huge elements to creating a fulfilling career, but what about career progression? It’s not spoken about as much, but a career isn’t really a career if you are not moving forward.

Imagine this, you’re in a job and you’re learning lots, you have a great connection to your team, making good money and enjoying some great perks and good company culture but there is no opportunity for you to progress. There’s no next step you are working towards, no opportunities for you and no plan with your manager for you to move forward.

If this was the case, all the other great things about your job might eventually stop feeling so good and you might start feeling frustrated and disengaged. In LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report, 94% of employees said they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their career and 74% of workers said that a lack of employee development opportunities was preventing them from reaching their full potential.

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you consider a job, but in time, the ability or inability to progress your career will become a huge factor in your career fulfillment and direction.

While considering this topic, we sat down with four recruiters in our Sydney office to chat about their career journeys. Not only have all our recruiters progressed in their roles in a short period of time, but they made the move to Talent because they wanted to be at a company that is known for helping their people develop their careers.

Making a career leap after a decade

“I know I made the right move”

Talent Sydney Principal Account Manager, Elliott Howard, delves into taking a career leap after working with a competitor for over a decade, and making the change during one of the most uncertain times in history:

“After 13 years at a competitor, I joined Talent in March 2020, two weeks before COVID swept the world. During the first few weeks of lockdown, I was quite distraught, kicking myself for leaving my old job at such an uncertain time. Looking back, I could not have been more fortunate – I am amazed with how transparent and supportive Talent is towards their people. I have the freedom to build my desk as I see fit, and the autonomy and support needed to be successful. Two years in and I know I made the right move.”

Career pivots and finding your way back to recruitment

“It was the best career choice I have ever made”

A career change can sometimes lead you back to your first love. Talent Sydney Principal Account Manager, Alex Marshall, shares how a career pivot ultimately reminded him that recruitment was where he was meant to be:

I started my recruitment career in 2012, and after eight years I decided to challenge myself with a role change and head into the corporate world. Although this was an amazing experience, I missed recruitment and the buzz it gave me. I started at Talent in February 2021 as a Principal Account Manager, and although it may seem a tad clichéd, I can genuinely say that it was the best career choice I have ever made. The culture is great, you are recognised for your achievements, and the work-life balance offered is second to none.

Getting your start in recruitment

“I was trusted to manage some of our largest clients in NSW”

Scarlett Cooke, Talent Sydney Account Manager, dives into how Talent helped her get her foot in the door and provided her with the opportunities to sky-rocket her career.

“I finished University and like many people, had no idea what I wanted to do next. I was offered an internship at Talent in the sales team, and straight away I loved it. I have now been at Talent for four years which has included multiple awards and three promotions. In a short period of time, I was trusted to manage some of our largest clients in NSW. I absolutely love that you can be 100% yourself at work. I genuinely feel like I have the best job in the world!”
